Evan Hargrave is a composer, performer, and educator based in Portland Oregon. His background of performing modern repertoire and studying the classics of organ literature has informed his tightly crafted contrapuntal style. The tension between traditional counterpoint and contemporary sounds motivates his artistic practice, such as in his expansive, poly-stylistic Chamber Symphony. At the same time, he enjoys working in smaller more intimate genres, such as in the intricate Inventions & Sinfonias, the demure Lyric Suite, or the Apollonian quartet Summer Winds.
In addition to studying classical and jazz since an early age, Evan Hargrave studied a wide range of western and world music disciplines at the University of Oklahoma, including Carnatic music, performance art, and organ performance. His primary composition studies at Oklahoma were with Dr. Marvin Lamb and Dr. Konstantinos Karathanasis. His Master's of Music at the University of Oregon allowed him to pursue focused study of counterpoint, formal theory, post-tonal theory, and organ performance in addition to a rigorous course of composition that emphasized frequent workshops and performances with visiting guest artists such as Estelí Gomez and Daniel Lippel. Evan is currently working as a freelance composer and musician in Portland, building his career as a composer and educator as he looks towards doctoral study.
